When an Ohio basement takes on water, two solutions come up again and again: a sump pump and a French drain. Homeowners often think they have to choose one. In reality they do different jobs, and the best foundation drainage systems use them together. Here is how each works and how to decide what your home needs.
What a French drain does
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe that collects water and carries it away from your foundation by gravity. Around a foundation, the version that matters most is the footing drain (also called drain tile) installed at the base of the wall. It intercepts groundwater before it can build hydrostatic pressure against your foundation and find its way through cracks or cold joints.
What a sump pump does
A sump pump handles water that has already collected in a low point, the sump pit. When water rises in the pit, the pump switches on and pushes it out and away from the house. Sump pumps are essential where gravity drainage is not possible, which is common in flatter Ohio lots and deeper basements.
French drain vs. sump pump: how to choose
The deciding factor is whether water can drain away by gravity. If your lot slopes and there is somewhere lower for water to go, an exterior or interior French drain may move water without a pump. If the basement sits below the point where water can exit on its own, you need a sump pump to lift it. Most Ohio homes with chronic moisture end up with both: drain tile to collect the water and a sump pump to evacuate it.
Interior vs. exterior drainage
Exterior footing drains installed during construction are the gold standard because they stop water before it reaches the wall. Interior drain tile, routed to a sump pit, is the common retrofit when digging up the outside is impractical. Both connect to the same principle: give water a controlled path out.
