Footings are the part of a foundation no one sees and everyone depends on. They spread the weight of the house onto the soil and keep the structure from settling or shifting. A common question from Ohio builders and homeowners is straightforward: how big do the footings need to be? Here is how footing size is determined and what is typical for a house.
What a footing does
A footing is a wider base of concrete poured beneath the foundation wall. By spreading the load over more soil, it lowers the pressure on the ground so the wall does not sink. Get the size wrong and you risk settlement, cracks, and uneven floors; get it right and the foundation stays put for the life of the home.
Typical footing sizes for a house
For many Ohio homes, a standard wall footing is about 16 to 20 inches wide and 8 to 10 inches thick, but those are starting points, not guarantees. The classic rule of thumb is that the footing should be twice the width of the wall it supports and at least as thick as the wall. A 10-inch poured wall, for example, commonly sits on a footing around 20 inches wide.
What changes the size
Three things drive footing dimensions: the load coming down from the house, the bearing capacity of your soil, and code. Heavier structures and weak or clay-rich soils need wider footings to spread the load. Ohio’s varied soils mean two homes a mile apart can require different footings, which is why sizing should follow an engineer’s design, not a generic chart.
Depth matters as much as width
In Ohio, footings must sit below the frost line so freeze-thaw cycles cannot heave them. That generally means a minimum depth around 32 inches in much of the state, deeper in colder northern areas. Reinforcement and footing strength
